Effective communication is critical for delivering quality end-of-life care. However, many healthcare professionals struggle with these conversations due to insufficient training. The End-of-Life Essentials (EOLE) project aims to address this gap with its online Communication and Decision-Making module. This article explores the impact of this module on healthcare professionals' knowledge, skills, and confidence.
Enhancing Knowledge, Skills, and Confidence
The EOLE Communication and Decision-Making module has shown significant improvements in learners' self-perceived knowledge, skills, and confidence. A pilot study involving 24 healthcare professionals revealed that their average scores for knowledge and skills in end-of-life care communication increased immediately after completing the module. Confidence scores saw a similar rise. Notably, these improvements were sustained three months later, indicating long-term retention of the training benefits.
Translating Learning into Practice
An essential measure of training effectiveness is its application in clinical practice. Following the module, 20 participants expressed intention to change their practice, and three months later, 16 reported actual changes. Examples included increased confidence in guiding end-of-life discussions, and a greater willingness to engage in difficult conversations with patients and families. These findings suggest that the module facilitates practical, actionable changes in clinical settings.
Significance of Improved Communication
End-of-life care presents unique challenges and requires sensitive communication. Inadequate skills in this area can adversely affect patient care and family support. By enhancing communication skills, healthcare professionals can better navigate these complex conversations, ultimately improving the quality of care provided. The EOLE Communication and Decision-Making module offers a structured, evidence-based approach to developing these essential skills.
Future Directions
While the pilot study results are promising, further integration of the EOLE module into hospital training programs could amplify its impact. Broader adoption would ensure that more healthcare professionals are equipped to manage end-of-life conversations effectively. Additionally, future research will combine quantitative data with qualitative insights to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the module's effectiveness. As the EOLE modules continue to be integrated into hospital training programs, they have the potential to greatly improve the quality of end-of-life care provided in hospitals.
